Website for distance learning in Neuroscience

Tool for distance learning : www.learnmedicalneuroscience.nl

Distance learning  is happening all over the world at the moment.  Many people are studying neuroscience online, perhaps for the first time. Our website is a valuable tool for learning neuroscience when distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This website was designed to support learning the MOOC Medical Neuroscience. However, it can also serve very well students in many other neuroscience or neurology classes.

Pandemic permitting, we (Ellen and prof. White) are going to present a poster focusing on the website www.learnmedicalneuroscience.nl at the 2020 Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience that is planned in Washington October 24-28.

In this poster we are showing the wealth of resources on the site and the way the website can support distance learning. Below is an early draft of our poster.

Draft poster www.learnmedicalneuroscience.nl for SfN2020

Central, orange colored, section of the poster

This main section of the poster shows example pages of what users will find on the website. Many pages include wonderful cartoons created by Kevin Reginald Parks, a successful student and now a mentor in the MOOC Medical Neuroscience. These cartoons reflect the passion – and sometimes the pain – that learners in the course experience while they are
building their knowledge of Medical Neuroscience.

This section of the poster shows a convenient QR code that takes you to the site.

Notice the top central page. It is a screenshot of a page of the website that shows the way the website is structured. There is a top menu giving an overview of the different  categories of content. Another menu at the right side gives access to Study Tips and News.

Other pages in the central panel of the poster show categories of content that users can find on the website.

  • Learning community. Page for the encouragement of remote learners in the MOOC. You are not alone when you learn Medical Neuroscience!
  • Virtual lab. Lists of links to relevant websites explaining finer details of the subject matter to students particularly interested in that concept . The Virtual Lab has 7 sub pages.
  • Learning Materials. Links to resources useful in reviewing key concepts. Subpage with learner-created visualizations and a subpage on “How to find relevant scientific literature”.
  • Neurological Exam. Links to sites and videos on the neurological exam.
  • Studytips. Several pages supporting the learning process with diverse sets of strategies and tips.

This gives the outline of  the story of the poster. At the Society for Neuroscience meeting, visitors to the poster  can read through it when the presenters are not present for conversation..

This part gives some data on the use of the website by our international distance learning community. We are always interested to see where users of the website are located and what pages they find to be most useful.

Value of the website

learnmedicalneuroscience.nl  is valued highly by members of our international learning community. It should also be valuable for  students who are studying neuroscience or neurology through distance learning and are not enrolled in the MOOC Medical Neuroscience.
